Dejadme que empiece con una confesión bastante embarazosa: ninguna persona me ha proporcionado tanto placer como David Bowie a lo largo de toda mi vida. Desde luego, puede que eso diga mucho de la calidad de ésta. No me malinterpretéis. He vivido momentos buenos, algunos incluso acompañado. Pero si hablamos de una alegría constante y continuada a lo largo de décadas, nada se puede comparar al placer que Bowie me ha dado. Todo comenzó, al igual que para muchos otros chicos y chicas ingleses cualesquiera, con la interpretación que hizo Bowie de “Starman” en el icónico programa de la BBC Top of the Pops el 14 de abril de 1972, y que fue seguido por más de una cuarta parte de la población británica. Me quedé con la boca abierta viendo cómo aquella criatura de pelo naranja enfundada en una malla de cuerpo entero rodeaba con un brazo afeminado los hombros de Mick Ronson. Lo que me impactó no fue tanto la calidad de la canción, sino la impresión que me causó el aspecto de Bowie. Era abrumador. Parecía tan sexual, tan perspicaz, tan astuto y tan extraño. Chulo y vulnerable al mismo tiempo.

Su rostro transmitía un sagaz entendimiento: una puerta hacia un mundo de placeres desconocidos. Algunos días después, Sheila, mi madre, compró una copia de “Starman”, simplemente porque le gustaban la canción y el pelo de Bowie (había trabajado de peluquera en Liverpool antes de venir al sur y defendía dogmáticamente que, desde finales de los ochenta en adelante, Bowie llevaba peluca). Recuerdo el retrato en blanco y negro de Bowie en la portada, con un punto amenazante, fotografiado desde abajo, y la etiqueta naranja de la RCA Victor que llevaba el sencillo de siete pulgadas. Por algún motivo, cuando me quedé solo con nuestro diminuto tocadiscos mono en lo que llamábamos el comedor (aunque no era ahí donde comíamos: ¿para qué?, no había tele), giré de inmediato el sencillo para escuchar la cara B. Recuerdo con toda claridad la reacción que sentí en mi cuerpo al escuchar “Suffragette City”. La excitación puramente física de aquel sonido era casi imposible de soportar. Supongo que sonaba como a… sexo. No es que yo supiese lo que era el sexo. Era virgen. No había besado jamás a nadie y jamás había querido hacerlo. Cuando la guitarra de Mick Ronson colisionó con mis órganos internos, sentí algo potente y extraño que jamás había experimentado hasta entonces. ¿Dónde estaba la ciudad de la sufragista? ¿Cómo se llegaba hasta allí? Tenía doce años. Mi vida había comenzado. Anomalías pasajeras Existe un concepto que alguna gente ha bautizado como “identidad narrativa”. Es la idea de que nuestra vida es una especie de relato con un comienzo, un desarrollo y un final. Por lo común hay alguna experiencia temprana traumática y determinante y una crisis, o varias, en el camino (sexo, drogas… cualquier forma de adicción sirve) de las que uno se recupera milagrosamente.

Este tipo de relatos vitales acostumbran a culminar en redención para después terminar con “Y en la Tierra paz y buena voluntad para con los hombres”. La unidad de nuestra vida reside en la coherencia del relato que podamos contar de nosotros mismos. La gente lo hace continuamente. Es la mentira que subyace en el concepto de “memorias”. Es la razón de ser de un pedazo enorme de lo que queda de la industria editorial, que se alimenta del horroroso submundo de los cursos de escritura creativa. En contra de esto, y como Simone Weil, yo creo en una escritura de creativa que avanza por espirales de negación en continuo ascenso hasta alcanzar la… nada. Creo también que la identidad es un asunto muy frágil. En el mejor de los casos, se trata de una secuencia de anomalías pasajeras, más que de una gran unidad narrativa. Como dejó sentado David Hume hace mucho tiempo, nuestra vida interior se compone de haces inconexos de percepciones, tirados por ahí como ropa sucia en los cuartos de la memoria. Puede que ése sea el motivo por el que la técnica del cut-up de Brion Gysin, en la que los textos se empalman de un modo aparentemente aleatorio usando recortes –y que Bowie, como es bien sabido, tomó prestada de William Burroughs–, se acerca a la realidad mucho más que cualquier variante del naturalismo. Los episodios que aportan a mi vida alguna estructura vienen con una frecuencia sorprendente de la mano de las letras y la música de David Bowie. Bowie hilvana mi vida como ninguna otra persona que conozca. Claro que hay otros recuerdos y otras historias que se podrían contar, pero en mi caso esto se complica por la amnesia que me causó un grave accidente de trabajo cuando tenía dieciocho años. Olvidé muchas cosas después de que se me quedara la mano atrapada en una máquina. Pero Bowie ha sido mi banda sonora; mi compañero constante, clandestino. En los buenos tiempos y en los malos. Míos y suyos. Lo sorprendente es que no creo que esté solo en esto. Hay todo un mundo de gente para la que Bowie era el ser que le proporcionaba una poderosa conexión emocional y le daba la libertad de convertirse en otra clase de persona, alguien más libre, más excéntrico, más sincero, más abierto, más excitante. Echando la vista atrás, Bowie fue una especie de piedra de toque para ese pasado, con todo su esplendor y sus esplendorosos fracasos; pero también para cierta constancia en el presente y para la posibilidad de un futuro, incluso para la reivindicación de un mundo mejor. Bowie no era una estrella de rock cualquiera, ni una colección de clichés mediáticos e insulsos sobre bisexualidad y bares de Berlín. Fue alguien que hizo de la vida algo menos trivial durante un período de tiempo tremendamente largo.

La asquerosa lección del arte

Después de recibir un disparo de Valerie Solanas en 1968, Andy Warhol dijo: “Antes de que me dispararan, tenía la sospecha de que, en lugar de vivir, sólo estaba viendo la tele. Desde el disparo, estoy seguro de ello”. El agudo comentario en once palabras de Bowie a las declaraciones de Warhol, en la canción epónima de Hunky Dory (1971), es terriblemente certero: “Andy Warhol, la gran pantalla / es imposible distinguir uno de otra”. La irónica consciencia de sí mismo del artista y su público no puede ser otra que la de su inautenticidad, llevada a niveles cada vez más conscientes. Bowie pone repetidamente en acción esta estética warholiana. La incapacidad para diferenciar a Andy Warhol de la gran pantalla se transforma en la continua sensación de Bowie de estar atrapado dentro de su propia película. Esa es la idea de “Life on Mars”, que comienza con la “chica del pelo castaño ceniza”, que está “enganchada a la gran pantalla”. Pero en la última estrofa el guionista de la película se revela como el propio Bowie o su personaje, aunque es imposible distinguir uno de otro: Pero la película es un tostón deprimente porque la he escrito ya diez veces o más está a punto de ser escrita de nuevo.

 La fusión de la vida con una película se alía con el recurso de la repetición para evocar el sentimiento melancólico de estar al mismo tiempo aburridos y atrapados. Nos convertimos en actores de nuestra propia película. Así entiendo yo los versos, tan incomprendidos, de Bowie en “Quicksand”:

Vivo en una película muda

que retrata el sagrado reino de Himmler

de una realidad soñada.

(I’m living in a silent film

Portraying Himmler’s sacred realm

Of dream reality.)

Bowie demuestra un profundo entendimiento de la concepción de Himmler del nacionalsocialismo en cuanto que artificio político, como una construcción artística y en particular arquitectónica, así como un espectáculo cinematográfico. Hitler, en palabras de Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, era “Ein Film aus Deutschland”: “Una película de Alemania”. Para Bowie, Hitler fue la primera estrella pop. Pero quedar atrapado en una película no evoca exaltación, sino depresión y una inacción a lo Major Tom:

Me hundo en las arenas movedizas de mi pensamiento

y ya no tengo el poder.

(I’m sinking in the quicksand of my thought

And I ain’t got the power anymore.)

 

En “Five Years”, después de conocer la noticia de que la Tierra morirá pronto, Bowie canta: “Y hacía frío y llovía, así que me sentí como un actor”. De manera similar, en una de mis canciones favoritas de todos los tiempos, “The Secret Life of Arabia” (versionada extravagante y ferozmente por el gran Billy MacKenzie, ya desaparecido, junto con la British Electric Foundation), Bowie canta:

Tienes que ver la película

la arena que me entra en los ojos

recorro una canción desértica

cuando la heroína muere.

You must see the movie

The sand in my eyes

I walk though a desert song

El mundo es un plató de cine, y la película que se rueda bien podría llamarse Melancolía. Una de las mejores canciones de Bowie, y de las más oscuras, “Candidate”, comienza con una declaración de fingimiento explícito, “Haremos ver que vamos a casa”, a la que sigue el verso: “Mi plató es alucinante, hasta huele como una calle”.

La asquerosa lección del arte es la de la inautenticidad, desde el primer momento hasta el último; una serie de repeticiones y de recreaciones, imposturas que desmontan la ilusión de realidad en la que vivimos y nos enfrentan a la realidad de la ilusión. El mundo de Bowie es como una versión distópica de El show de Truman, ese rincón enfermizo del mundo que queda retratado de un modo tan contundente en los paisajes urbanos violentos y en ruinas de “Aladdin Sane” y “Diamond Dogs” y, más sutilmente, en los desolados paisajes sonoros de “Warszawa” y “Neuköln”. Por tomar prestada la expresión de Iggy Pop en Lust for Life (procedente a su vez de la película de Antonioni de 1975, si bien Bowie podría ser su referente implícito), Bowie es el pasajero que atraviesa los suburbios destrozados de la ciudad, bajo un cielo brillante y vacío.

Maravilloso

¿De dónde provenía el poder de Bowie para conectar con chicos y chicas normales y corrientes, especialmente con los que estaban algo marginados, los que se aburrían y los que se sentían profundamente incómodos en su piel? La respuesta obvia nos la da “Rock’n’Roll Suicide”, que es el último tema de Ziggy Stardust y la canción con la que Bowie cerraba muchos de sus conciertos. Este es el clímax:

Bowie/Ziggy rechazaba las normas dominantes de la sociedad existente: chico/chica, humano/alien, gay/hetero. El era el forastero, el extraterrestre, el visitante (éste último, The Visitor, fue el título que el alien humanoide Thomas Jerome Newton escogió para su álbum –un mensaje en una botella– cuando Bowie lo interpretó en El hombre que vino de las estrellas en 1976). Ahí estaba Ziggy con su canción suicida, tendiéndonos la mano a nosotros, sumidos en una confusión muda, enmarañada, autodestructiva de extrarradio, y diciéndonos que éramos maravillosos. Millones de mini-Hamlets retraídos que vivían su propio infierno sin amor en todo tipo de aldeas, pueblos y ciudades desperdigados oyeron esas palabras y quedaron atónitos al ser perdonados. Sólo teníamos que tender la mano. Lo hicimos. Compramos el disco.

ALMA MAGAZINE is a media owned by GHIDS MEDIA CORP.

These terms and conditions (“Agreement”) set forth the general terms and conditions of your use of the ALMA MAGAZINE.com website (“Website”), and any of their related products and services (collectively, “Services”). Dispute resolution

The formation, interpretation, and performance of this Agreement and any disputes arising out of it shall be governed by the substantive and procedural laws of Florida, United States without regard to its rules on conflicts or choice of law and, to the extent applicable, the laws of United States. The exclusive jurisdiction and venue for actions related to the subject matter hereof shall be the courts located in Florida, United States, and you hereby submit to the personal jurisdiction of such courts. You hereby waive any right to a jury trial in any proceeding arising out of or related to this Agreement. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply to this Agreement.

Assignment

You may not assign, resell, sub-license or otherwise transfer or delegate any of your rights or obligations hereunder, in whole or in part, without our prior written consent, which consent shall be at our own sole discretion and without obligation; any such assignment or transfer shall be null and void.
