Visitamos tres funerales donde el invitado más importante es el difunto.

Miriam Burbank es el foco de un funeral por su apariencia extravagante. Inmediatamente capta la atención de toda la sala: sentada a la mesa, empuña un vaso whisky Glenlivet con una cajetilla de cigarros rubios abierta sobre el mantel. Sus uñas están pintadas con los colores de su equipo de fútbol americano favorito: los Santos de Nueva Orleans. Unas inmensas gafas negras y un ostentoso anillo en un dedo de la mano izquierda completan el atuendo tan peculiar. Ella no se mueve a pesar de su carácter extrovertido. Todos los allí reunidos se encargan de remarcar esto: su humor y sus constantes ocurrencias. Sin embargo, ella no canta los himnos de blues y góspel que inundan la calurosa tarde de Nueva Orleans. Las personas, de luto, contemplan su figura de lejos. Con cierta distancia, algunas se acercan y le dicen palabras suaves. Otras, lloran un poco y vuelven a entonar las canciones festivas en su honor. Claro, es su propio funeral. “Debíamos hacer algo fantástico, no podíamos dejarla ir de forma convencional”, explica entre lágrimas Zymora Kimball, su hija. “Mi intención es aliviar el dolor familiar. Ella sufrió mucho antes de partir. No quería recordarla así”, menciona cuando se refiere al responso que lleva adelante en una histórica casa de sepelios de su ciudad natal para hacer homenaje a la vida de su madre. Unas cincuenta y cinco personas, entre familiares, amigos y vecinos, llenan el colorido ambiente de la funeraria Charbonnet. Ubicada en el corazón de Nueva Orleans, hoy es célebre a nivel mundial por su singular modo de homenajear a los difuntos. La gente aquí no viste de negro ni guarda silencio: luces de discoteca ambientan el lugar y, sobre el brillante piso de madera, varias mujeres entregan una tonada de despedida acompañadas por aplausos y coros. Se abren latas de cerveza helada para combatir las altas temperaturas. Los conocidos intercambian divertidas anécdotas sobre Miriam una y otra vez. Alguien comenta de aquel viaje al Gran Cañón, todos ríen. Cada uno tiene la suya y nadie duda en escuchar las historias para luego afirmar emocionado o derramar alguna lágrima al pasar. Hoy es su fiesta y nadie puede negarlo. A los 53 años, “Mimi”, como la apodaban sus seres queridos, dejó la vida terrenal con el mismo espíritu de siempre. Alegre y despreocupada a pesar del dolor que le causaba una terrible enfermedad. “Es como si estuviera entre nosotros”, la voz de Sherline, su hermana y la menor de las Burbank, suena conmovida y recurre a sus amigas y parientes para no mostrar unas mejillas surcadas por el llanto. Zymora canta fuerte y su blusa rosa eléctrico ondula al ritmo de las palmas de los deudos. “Creo que es el mejor homenaje que el vecindario podía regalarle a mi madre”, habla y su voz se eleva sobre la música que acompaña el adiós a Miriam. Las paredes y sus adornos parecen retumbar al compás de esta inusual fiesta. Lyelle Bellard, el director de la firma fúnebre, es parte de los presentes en el recinto. Va y viene. Con pasos enérgicos atiende todos los pedidos. De traje oscuro y gafas, se encarga de darles la bienvenida a los familiares en la recepción y de que las cosas funcionen como estaban planeadas. Lo primero que señala es que su negocio, situado en Philip Street, nunca se encontró tan revolucionado como ahora que ofrecen este tipo de eventos. Relata, como es sabido, que la tradición de Nueva Orleans y sus funerales se remite a las raíces africanas y la celebración de la muerte como otra instancia de la vida. “Es la segunda vez este año que llevamos a cabo un servicio de estas características”, esclarece mientras, apurado, se aleja para atender un teléfono en su oficina. Al rato, agrega: “Como decía, ya hemos celebrado dos funerales donde presentamos a los difuntos en situaciones especiales, vestidos y preparados para la ocasión”. El calor de la tarde hace transpirar a más de uno. Se pueden ver las frentes perladas por el sudor y la ropa empapada, pero, aun así, agasajan la partida de Mimi. Bellard detalla que este nuevo procedimiento de organizar sus recepciones ha causado un “furor inesperado” y que su emprendimiento ha recibido llamados de todo el mundo para realizar acontecimientos similares. Como pueden asegurar aquí, esta forma de honrar a los muertos tiene sus orígenes en Nueva Orleans: cuando finalizaba 2012, Lionel Batiste –un músico de jazz y personalidad local– falleció víctima de una enfermedad fatal. “Batiste anunció que su deseo era que los asistentes a su funeral no se agacharan para mirarlo, no quería aparecer dentro de un cajón. Por eso en su servicio se lo podía ver de pie, reclinado sobre un poste de luz”, rememora el director de Charbonnet con una sonrisa en su rostro. “Con las manos en el bastón y un sombrero reclinado sobre un costado, ése fue su último pedido”, concluye Bellard. Un atardecer rojizo pinta de colores cálidos los frentes de las residencias. Orquídeas blancas y algunas latas de cerveza Busch en la entrada completan los deseos de la familia Burbank, que, entre abrazos y besos, cierran el día con las emociones florecidas. Dieron el último adiós a su querida Miriam y conmemoraron su vida como Zymora, Sherlene y los demás la recordarán siempre: entre sonrisas y de fiesta.

PUERTO RICO: EL CORAZON BORICUA TODO LO PUEDE

El 3 de marzo pasado, Fernando de Jesús Díaz Beato fue asesinado a balazos. Carolina, un municipio que reposa sobre la costa noroeste de Puerto Rico, se vio convulsionado por su muerte. Allí, al este de la ciudad capitalina de San Juan, Fernando recibió quince disparos fatales en un enfrentamiento en la calle. Abandonó el mundo muy rápido, víctima de la inseguridad y las disputas territoriales. Pero a seis días de la tragedia, el joven de 26 años se halla sentado en una silla de madera mientras su mirada se diluye en los rincones de la funeraria Marín. Sus manos, entrelazadas, permanecen quietas y –entre sus dedos índice y anular– cuelga un fino cigarro sin encender. Lhizz Díaz Beato, su hermana, confiesa el porqué de la pose de Fernando el día de su velatorio: “Es una larga historia”, comienza, “no queríamos verlo acostado en un ataúd. Y esa silla fue todo un símbolo cuando éramos pequeños. Nuestra madre la mantenía recubierta de una funda plástica y nunca, pero nunca, nos dejaba sentarnos allí”.

En Puerto Rico, la Empresa Marín realiza servicios acordes a la personalidad del difunto, como fue el caso de Pedrito Pantojas.

La muchacha indica que la respuesta de Fernando era siempre la misma. Imitando una voz cansada relata: “Dios mío, solo podré utilizarla cuando muera, ¿no?”. Ella remarca que entre todos llegaron a la misma conclusión: querían hacer algo distinto. Algo que resaltase la personalidad de su hermano de forma que nadie olvidase cómo era realmente. Y así fue como la familia recurrió a esta casa de servicios fúnebres con una propuesta acorde a su meta: desde la empresa familiar Marín ofrecen sepelios de “la más alta calidad desde 2001”, según las palabras de Damaris Marín, la directora de la casa. “Todo comenzó con la muerte de Pedrito Pantojas”, recuerda ella con un poco de trabajo para traer a su memoria el nombre del difunto que inició esta excéntrica tradición. “Cuando su familia nos comunicó que querían verlo parado en vez de acostado pensamos que era una broma.” Anuncia que, desde 2009, proporcionan este estilo de ceremonias para todo el país y que hasta hoy registran nueve “muertos parados”. Esa es su manera de llamar a las personas que, luego de ser embalsamadas, escenifican un momento “ideal”: “Nos gusta pensarlos así, ideales”, sentencia Damaris. “Hemos tenido ambulancias y motocicletas en la sala”, sonríe mientras extiende un álbum lleno de fotografías. En la primera página se ve un hombre que aparece sentado con las piernas cruzadas y una boina similar a la del “Che” Guevara. “Pedrito era un chico del barrio. El vivía cerca de la primera de nuestras funerarias y cada vez que pasaba por allí nos decía que quería ser embalsamado de pie. Nunca le dimos mucha importancia hasta el día que recibimos a su madre en nuestras oficinas. Ahí nos dimos cuenta de que no se había burlado de nosotros”, concluye Damaris. “Los precios varían. Lo importante es cumplir la demanda de los allegados y mantener la calidad y excelencia que nos caracteriza”, alega Damaris al tiempo que pasa otra foto y muestra a un hombre sobre un cuadrilátero vestido de boxeador. Con ropa y calzado deportivos esgrime una pose desafiante en una esquina, como esperando un retador. A diferencia de Fernando de Jesús, este difunto posee unas gafas oscuras para cubrir su mirada. La directora desliza que para llegar al resultado de mantener los ojos abiertos del joven acribillado fue todo un desafío: “Nuestro equipo de embalsamadores hizo un gran trabajo, el primer muerto con los ojos abiertos en la historia”, como si se refiriera a un capítulo de la exitosa serie Six Feet Under. Luego Damaris revela que esa idea fue fruto de la creatividad de su hermana: “Ella consideró que podía quedar muy bien con lo que quería plasmar la familia. Cuando lo vieron, expresaron su satisfacción”. Afuera, llueve, pero hay sol. Un fenómeno recurrente en territorios boricuas, gentilicio atribuido al pueblo nativo de Puerto Rico. “Algunas personas dicen que esto no se ve bien”, subraya Damaris. Ella rechaza todas las críticas que se le atribuyen a la funeraria emplazada en uno de los barrios más pintorescos de San Juan: “Nuestro objetivo es hacer del luto y la pena algo soportable. ¿Por qué no haríamos lo que las familias deseen?”. La lluvia golpea suave el techo del lugar. El sonido de las gotas es débil y, desde la ventana, se despliega la calle Francia bajo una fina capa de agua. El velatorio del joven está llegando a su fin: es el tercer día de servicio y, como marca la legislación de Puerto Rico, Fernando será enterrado en un féretro.

Como establece Lhizz Díaz Beato, el alma de los seres queridos vive en el corazón de los que los recuerdan y Fernando, gracias al buen trabajo que realizaron Damaris Marín y su equipo, calmó un poco el dolor de su madre. Solo con esas horas, “cambió drásticamente su estado emocional”. “Mamá pasó los últimos momentos con su hijo como lo recordaba realmente, y no como una víctima de la violencia en las calles”, admite Díaz Beato. Por su parte, añade que da ría lo que fuera por compartir un último “mofongo” con él. Dice que este plato típico elaborado con plátanos fritos era uno de los preferidos de su hermano. Damaris, luego de acompañar hasta la salida a la familia Díaz Beato con saludos afectuosos, resalta que “vivimos en una democracia y cada uno puede expresarse libremente”. El calor y la lluvia en San Juan de Puerto Rico no dan tregua y la gente cruza el umbral de la Empresa Marín para perderse en el clima tropical. ¿Dónde seguirá el duelo de Fernando? No se sabe. Pero hay una certeza: el corazón boricua todo lo puede.

FLORIDA: EL ESTILO, ANTES QUE NADA

La biografía de Alexander Bernard Harris, de 33 años, es una historia trágica que llega a su fin con la muerte del joven empresario del hip hop. Cientos de amigos y parientes se reúnen hoy para acercar sus respetos al finado. La funeraria Grace de Miami se viste de luto para darle una última despedida al hombre que, junto con su compañero Todd Green, fue acribillado a la salida de una barbería en el boulevard Biscayne luego de una balacera. Ambos hombres están siendo velados en el mismo servicio: el cuerpo de Green, que se encuentra ataviado con un traje gris de tres partes, descansa en la zona de visitas. Una mujer se acerca, besa su frente y se retira lentamente. Aunque el anuncio de la entrada proclame los dos velatorios esta tarde, el cuerpo de Alexander no está en el sitio. Sentado dentro de un lujoso Lamborghini amarillo, el talento emergente del rap recibe a los asistentes en el estacionamiento trasero que posee la casa fúnebre. Harris viste acorde: el jersey rojo de los San Francisco 49ers demuestra otra de las pasiones que, mientras vivía, era el motivo de su existir. Su fanatismo por el equipo de fútbol americano también puede verse plasmado en la decoración que rodea el excéntrico vehículo del hombre que trabajaba para Xela Entertainment Group. Ramos enormes de rosas rojas y orquídeas se esparcen sobre una alfombra de terciopelo, como es de esperarse, de un rojo brillante.  “Era su auto predilecto.” Tareel Harris, hija de Alexander, cuenta que su padre, cada vez que podía bromeaba con que su entierro debía ser dentro de éste Lamborghini.

Es que pasear con su progenitor por las calles de Florida era su salida favorita. “Dábamos largos paseos escuchando música y hablando de la vida”, afectada, la joven observa que la vestimenta fue elegida por ella misma. No dejó un detalle librado al azar. Y para esto hizo una investigación extensiva sobre el tema: “El primer caso que encontré fue el de un apostador de Chicago que treinta años atrás diseñó un ataúd que se asemejaba a un Cadillac Seville”, asegura Tareel. El caso que se refiere Harris es el de William Stokes Jr., asesinado cuando salía de un motel a los 28 años: “Allí descubrimos que existen funerarias que cumplen los últimos deseos de las personas”. Al, vecino de Harris, afirma que el productor era un buen hombre: “Siempre estaba dispuesto a ayudar. Como aquella ocasión que no podía comprar los materiales para terminar mi casa y Alex sin preguntar me dio el dinero para levantar las paredes de mi hogar”, evoca mientras bebe una copa de champagne. El líquido dorado burbujea en las copas de los cientos de allegados que despiden a estos dos jóvenes. La música es más cercana a la de una juerga que a la recepción de un sepelio. “Era un gran tipo”, sentencia Al y avisa que las canciones que suenan en el servicio son las que producía el difunto. Los automóviles estacionados en el frente de la funeraria Grace comienzan a partir. De a poco, la acera va quedando vacía y los últimos invitados se despiden de la heredera de Harris. Entran al Lamborghini por la puerta del acompañante, se acercan al finado y susurran algunas palabras ensayando un “hasta pronto”. Las copas quedan vacías y los arreglos florales, desarmados. Se ven las rosas sobre el techo del vehículo, algunas otras sobre el regazo del hombre que eligió dejar este mundo con el mismo estilo que lo caracterizaba cuando creaba música. Tareel hace una última fotografía y, desde la puerta, saluda enternecido. Sabe que está homenajeando a su padre de la mejor manera posible: reviviendo su pasión.

Indemnification

The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply to this Agreement.

Assignment
